Art Show "More Than A Resource", 2018
"A Person Not A Resource", 2018
- Define what techniques you tired and mastered? Struggles? I thought I mastered spray paint but I need a lot more practice with stencils. I wanted the letters to appears clear but all around it to appear messy. But the spray paint can get underneath and leak especially if the stencils are not taped down right or spray too much spray paint.
- How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists? I didn't look up art pieces or artists to base this art piece off of I just looked up women's right activist art and posters till something came to mind. And before I even really began spray painting a student medium teaching from my classmate, Sara, was on spray and she had said in her presentation that spray painting artists and seen in graffiti use stencils.
- Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements. There wasn't really an evolution to this piece as soon as this idea came to me I attempted to put create it the sign and the photo. I knew in the sign itself it need something to make the piece more exciting so that's what the red paint added and it drew emphasis to "ME" even though I ended up changing the photo to black and white. Also for the photo, I knew I wanted it to be in the street and the solid double lines that seem to go on for forever, along with the curb of the side walk and the fence I wanted to show movement, lines, and direction in this piece also with the mountains and clouds in the distance. Metaphorically I wanted to show with this the idea of a never ending journey, but also the reverse idea to that is the long, long path that's behind this women. Showing that we have come a long way but also this isn't the end of the line, the road is still continuing ahead of us.
- If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time? If I could redo this piece I would of used photoshop to leave the majority of the photo black and white while the sign was in color so that there would be that emphasizing color and creating even more contract but add more life to the photo.
- Elaborate on how this piece links with you other pieces? What is the common thread. Still the high contract between the lights and darks but with the splash of color to make the piece more appealing and attracting. If I would of used photoshop that would of been more clear in the photographs. And relating back to the common theme of body with some of the other pieces, the tittle has two nouns in it and the the women is a person so also a noun in the art work itself. The physical aspect of a thing being the women's body being objectified is a connection to the rest of the theme however there it that someone can be a possession emotionally as well.
"Escape", 2018
- Define what techniques you tired and mastered? Struggles? My struggle with his piece was time management or micro managing with this project. I spent all my time second semester every art class or about 3 months making the drawing part of this piece and I started over probably about 6 times just on the final not even including the attempts to drafting it. I mastered charcoal and adding contrast of colors and and direction and specific movement of the charcoal when drawing the movement and bends and curves of the skin, body.
- How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists? I didn't see or research any other artist that I found for this piece. I did look up drawing of yoga poses and child's pose and I found a drawing by Jouett Martinez on google images that helped me with the shadows and highlights and one other drawing that I don't have the name of and a general idea of the child's pose and how drafting general ideas how to draw it.
- Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements. In the beginning I didn't have a plan I just had a feeling or an idea that I wanted to put onto paper. I knew I wanted to have spray paint in a part of the piece. I originally draw out the physical anatomy of a heart and all the different parts of it to tape onto the drawing to use as a stencil to spray paint. Instead I ended up with the other stencil that was used on the final piece.
- If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time? If I could redo this piece I would of draw the body on a larger piece of paper because I didn't think about the hand being cut off or the hair by the time I glued it down to the spray paint background. The right arm of the stencil wasn't symmetrical to the left from the audiences view and I would of designed the stencil very different.
- Elaborate on how this piece links with you other pieces? What is the common thread. The common thread is high contrast in colors with another color that draws in more attention and pulls the piece together. Majority of my pieces have high contrast between two colors and then a gold or a rose gold. The other common thread is body. From paintings to wrist, full body sculpture, photography of wrist and etc.
Go Big! "More Than A Resource", 2017
- Define what techniques you tired and masters? Struggles? Plastering is a long and not always the easiest process. When plastering my hips and top of thighs I had to stand still not being able to sit down for 4 and a half hours. ~2-3 hours for my legs. I did this whole thing by myself other than plastering other people for the second torso and arm. To plaster my hips and torso I wrapped myself in a trash bag but it was too baggy so the I wrapped myself in packing tape over that so the plaster is more skin tight. Sometimes just pieces that don’t come out strong enough or I didn’t put on enough vaseline so when taking the piece off it just ended up dismantled. It is also so so time consuming and there not enough hours in the day to do everything. There were days when I would just wake up work on it all day and only have 2-3 pieces done. Each body part isn’t the same size. My thighs ended up being different lengths and my hips and stomach don’t even look like my body because that piece would not stay together and more plaster wrap wasn’t helping. So it is incredibly reinforced with cardboard, nails, wooden stick extra. When plastering, it's come out better if the dipping water is warmer and if you plaster the second layer while the first layer is still wet. And don't forget to put on vasaline before plastering or else you won't be able to get it off.
- How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists? I never researched a specific artists who worked with plaster sculptures but once in freshman year I saw someone plastering for an art project. I always had this idea for this project since the beginning of the year.
- Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements. In my beginning, first idea of this project at the beginning of the year I was going to create ribs for the torso. I always wanted the sculpture to be painted purple but have no planned reason behind it it just felt right and I knew there needed to be something else to tie the sculpture together to pop so I went with gold.
- If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time? I would of been more precise about timing in-between layers of plaster on the arms and measured the lengths and widths of the other pieces so they all matched.
- Elaborate on how this piece links with you other pieces? What is the common thread. The common thread is the body. Also color contrast between the pieces, gold and majority were made to some extent with spray paint.
"Giving Tree", 2017
- Define what techniques you tired and masters? Techniques used for this project that I feel I mastered was how to bend and manipulate the wire and coiling the wire. What was I struggled with was trying to make it appear that there is snow on the tree at the base of it and on the branches. I used faked snow window decorator but it still was hard to notice and the spray paint base I used before the snow and the fake snow itself was a very yellow, pearly color. So trying to get the correct color was a challenge as well. And creating the apple on the tree out of hot glue but majority of people mistook it for a tree ornament.
- How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists? My inspiration for this piece wasn't based off any other artist I came across but last year a made a coiled wire sculpture of a person on a unicycle on a tight rope and I wanted to create another sculpture out of wire after creating that one.
- Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements. This piece was originally going to be a drawing or a painting of a hand picking an apple from a tree in the background of my self portrait but I really enjoy sculptures and wanted to try again at this medium.
- If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time? I would want of made the sculpture bigger I felt that it was not visible enough.
- Elaborate on how this piece links with you other pieces? What is the common thread. There would of been a common thread if I stuck with the idea a hand picking an apple because I've already has a painting of my hand and a lot of my pieces had to do with body. However my theme, more than a resource, trees and apples are obviously resources but purposely there's barely any resource left and the tree isn't lively.

- Some techniques that I succeeded with with this project was matching paint colors and using different layers of paint especially with the black outlines. Some techniques I struggled with was use of water colors with the type of paper.
- My inspiration wasn't based off any particular artist or work of art. I have always drawn hands for sketches and wanted to try art for the first time and I always base my drawings off my own hand(s) and since I just recently got my tattoo I added it to my painting.
- The evolution of my painting began with wanting to paint a hand holding an apple but it turned into drawing my own hand. I added the water color paint dripping off the hand to go along with the tattoo that I am art or almost art is something that comes with me like paint.
- If I could do something over with this piece I would've used a different type of paper and stated with a brighter based color to then put layer onto like orange to be more of my skin tone. I was aiming for a pale color to add contract from the brown paper and the colorful paints. I also would've made it bigger and added something to the background to help as depth and shadow.
